RBSI has been working with Kinetic Traction Systems to develop a custom five-axis active magnetic bearing system for a turbo-aerator. The aerator is designed to operate from 16,000 to 25,000 rpm, allowing for recovery of up to 135 kW of electric power. The design inlet conditions are 112 m3/min of gas at an inlet pressure of 55 MPa.
The magnetic bearing designs for this application were purely electromagnetic. The magnetic thrust bearing is segmented to reduce eddy current and hysteresis losses. The radial bearings are e-core designs to allow for a more compact design and easier control.
Initial testing of the aerator and magnetic bearing design is complete. The controls system includes unbalance rejection to greatly reduce bearing loads and vibration levels.
RBSI specializes in custom active magnetic bearing systems designed to match your application. For more information on the design and testing for the turbo-aerator, see our recent paper presented at ISMB 15.
